Shot peening is a method of cold working in which compressive stresses are induced into the surface of a metal part by subjecting it to impingement of spherical metal shot under very controlled conditions. It is similar in effect to that a peening ‘hammer’ leaving behind small indentations in the surface of the metal.

These indentations result in a zone of residual compressive stress (RCS) in the surrounding subsurface area of the indentation as the material attempts to return to its original shape. This RCS is the key characteristic in preventing fatigue failures, the most prevalent reason shot peening is specified. Shot peening is also used to prevent stress corrosion cracking, galling and fretting.
